What are nasal polyps?

If you’ve been dealing with a cold that you just can’t shake, or find that you have difficulty breathing through your nose for several weeks, it might be time to book a consultation visit and evaluation with an ear, nose, and throat doctor. Dr. Payam Daneshrad of Daneshrad Clinic can assess a patient with information regarding their symptoms and a physical examination. In some instances, patients struggling with chronic sinus congestion, facial pressure, and discomfort may be diagnosed with nasal polyps.

What are nasal polyps?

Dr. Payam Daneshrad describes nasal polyps as very small growths that can develop in the sinuses or nasal passages. While they are never cancerous, they can be uncomfortable and cause a variety of issues. Patients might believe they have a cold, but they might actually be dealing with one or more nasal polyps inhibiting the ability to breathe properly through the nose. Some feel as though they have a very severe cold that won’t resolve with medication or time.

What causes nasal polyps to form?

While there is no clear reason why nasal polyps might develop in one person and not another, there does seem to be links to individuals who have certain conditions that cause inflammation of the nasal passages. The patients who are more likely to develop nasal polyps are those with:

  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Sensitivity to aspirin

How is a nasal polyp diagnosed?

Nasal polyps are often diagnosed with a physical evaluation with Dr. Payam Daneshrad. Depending on the position and location of the nasal polyp, it may be seen with an otoscope. Other times an endoscopy, CT scan, or MRI can diagnose the problem.

What can be done about nasal polyps?

Treatment for nasal polyps may include either medications or surgery. Medications can help in shrinking polyps or reducing swelling and congestion, while surgery will permanently remove the nasal polyp when these more conservative options are unhelpful.
