Understanding sinusitis

If you’ve ever experienced a cold that didn’t seem like it would let up, or experienced sinus blockage for extended periods of time without relief, you may have had a condition known as sinusitis. Sinusitis is an infection or inflammation that occurs in the sinus cavities of the face. There are several sinus cavities that are throughout the face that may become blocked or infected. When this happens, many patients will need to work with a doctor to get a proper diagnosis and effective treatment, such as antibiotics. At Daneshrad Clinic, Dr. Payam Daneshrad can assist patients with the diagnosis and treatment of sinusitis.

What types of sinusitis can occur?

There are some patients who may get a sinus infection every few years due to congestion. Other patients might have sinus problems several times a year or throughout the year. These patients are sometimes considered chronic sinusitis patients.  With the assistance of a primary care provider or an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist, patients can get a proper diagnosis of the type of sinusitis they have and the most effective way to address it.

What symptoms are associated with sinusitis?

The most common signs that sinusitis is present include:

  • Long-lasting cold-like symptoms
  • Blocked, congested, or stuffy nose
  • Fullness or pressure in the face, especially around the eyes
  • Loss of smell
  • Thickened nasal discharge

What causes sinusitis?

In most cases of acute sinusitis, viruses or bacteria are responsible for the development of this condition. Some patients will start with a cold that doesn’t resolve and end up with a sinus infection. Others may have chronic inflammation of the sinus cavities that requires medication to treat. Those with chronic problems may need further evaluation to determine the source of the problem and find the most appropriate treatment solution for their particular needs.
