Understanding chronic reflux (GERD)

At Daneshrad Clinic, we see patients on a regular basis who are dealing with acid reflux. While acid reflux can often be linked to certain health conditions or food intake, other patients deal with consistent and chronic acid reflux that can greatly impact their day-to-day life. At this point, the patient may be struggling with a condition known as GERD, or “gastroesophageal reflux disease.”

Understanding GERD

Dr. Payam Daneshrad describes GERD as a digestive disorder. It typically affects the esophageal sphincter between the stomach and esophagus, causing it to allow stomach contents to be pushed back up through the esophagus. This means the acid and food in the stomach is brought back upward and irritates the esophagus. This causes discomfort and heartburn symptoms that can be almost unbearable in severe cases of GERD.

How is GERD treated?

There are several ways in which a doctor can help patients treat their condition. In most situations, when GERD is mild or moderate, lifestyle and dietary changes can reduce pain and discomfort. By eating a more appropriate diet, there may be a reduction in the amount of damage to the esophagus. Foods and beverages that cause damage and irritation to the esophageal lining may include tomato products, citrus fruits, citrus juices, and pepper. Patients may also want to reduce the portion sizes of their meals and eliminate meals consumed three hours before bedtime.  In addition to specific lifestyle and nutritional changes, patients may also be prescribed medication that can neutralize the acid in the stomach to reduce or stop heartburn from occurring. Antacids can be obtained over-the-counter, while prescription-strength antacids may need referral from a professional. Combining these treatments can help patients live with their condition comfortably and improve their quality of life.
