Should You Get Your Tonsils Removed?

TonsillitisTonsillitis, an inflammation of the tonsils, is incredibly common, with most people experiencing it at least once in their lifetime. Common treatments include over-the-counter medications to alleviate the pains and discomforts of tonsillitis and may also include antibiotics.

In some instances, however, tonsillectomy may be recommended to remove tonsils.

Learn when you should get your tonsils removed.

What Do Tonsils Do?

Tonsils are part of your immune system and function similarly to lymph nodes, flushing out germs and containing infection-fighting white blood cells. In the course of their protection, they may get infected, inflamed, and lead to significant discomfort.

There may be some indication that removing tonsils at an early age may leave you susceptible to a greater risk of developing allergies and upper respiratory infectious diseases later in life.

However, there are times when the pain of tonsillitis outweighs the potential increased risk.

When To Get a Tonsillectomy

Though a consultation with your doctor will lead to the best solution for you and your tonsils, there are some markers your doctor will look at generally in determining their removal.

For one, a tonsillectomy may be for you if you are subject to recurrent infections of at least seven or more in a year. Removal of tonsils may also be recommended if your tonsillitis is unresponsive to medication or if the growth of your tonsils obstructs your throat, making it difficult to swallow or breathe. There may also be complications, such as tonsil stones or a peritonsillar abscess, which can cause pain and lead to complications.

Make sure to speak with your doctor to know if tonsil removal is for you. Even if you don’t have one of the mentioned markers for tonsillectomy, consulting with your doctor can help find a solution for you.
