Understanding chronic rhinorrhea

Sinus SpecialistWhile a runny nose and congestion is common with colds and allergies, some patients deal with non-stop drainage even when these problems are successfully managed. This can lead some patients to obtain a diagnosis of “chronic rhinorrhea” by their ENT doctor at Daneshrad Clinic. Our team offers Santa Monica and Torrance, CA area patients with a proper diagnosis of their condition and effective treatment solutions.

What is chronic rhinorrhea?

Chronic rhinorrhea is the medical term for a runny nose. Fluid, called mucus, that drains from the nose may be either intermittent or constant, and the mucus may present as either clear or thick. Mucus is essential in keeping the nasal area moist. Naturally, it drains down the throat and is swallowed. However, some patients experienced continual running of the nose and congestion. This leads to a diagnosis of chronic rhinorrhea, in which a doctor may evaluate a patient to determine the source of the problem.

What can cause chronic rhinorrhea?

Some of the more common causes of this condition include:

  • Chronic colds and flus
  • Allergic and non-allergic rhinitis
  • Crying
  • Cold weather
  • Infections of the sinus or ears
  • Large turbinates
  • Nasal polyps
  • Foreign body in the nasal passageways
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Inflammation or enlargement of the adenoids

What can be done about chronic rhinorrhea?

Depending on the cause, some cases of chronic rhinorrhea can be addressed with medications. This may include antihistamines and decongestants. Patients may use over-the-counter medications or prescription medications may be prescribed. Nasal sprays are another way to target the problem, and this may include anti-drip anticholinergic nasal sprays, antihistamine nasal sprays, saline nasal sprays, or corticosteroid nasal sprays. In situations where a deviated septum, nasal polyps, or adenoids are to blame, surgical interventions may be suggested.
