What is a nasal polyp?
Nasal polyps are tissue masses or growths that develop on the lining of the sinuses or the nose. They are typically benign, but they can be problematic for patients who have them. Nasal polyps are not cancerous. They develop alone or in groups, and can appear pink or brown in color. These growths are often masses of tissues that develop in the wrong place. They are not related to polyps that might develop elsewhere on the body, such as uterine polyps and fibroids.
What causes nasal polyps?
Nasal polyps are commonly seen in patients who have a genetic predisposition to them. Patients over the age of 40 who have parents that experienced nasal polyps often develop them as well. By knowing your family history, you can make it easier for your ENT professional to provide a proper diagnosis.
How is a nasal polyp diagnosed?
Polyps are often seen in the nose with the use of a lighted instrument used by an ENT doctor. Endoscopy or CT scans may be used to view nasal polyps further into the nasal cavity or to find any other abnormalities that may be present in the nose.
What treatment options are available for nasal polyps?
Patients have both surgical and nonsurgical treatments available to them, including:
- Steroid spray
- Oral steroids
- Anti-allergy medications
- Antibiotics
- Polypectomy
