What do I do if I have chronic nosebleeds?

Many individuals deal with a nosebleed at least once in their lives. Nosebleeds can occur to anyone of any age, but are more common in younger children and adults over the age of 50. There are many reasons why a patient might experience a nosebleed, and the team at Daneshrad Clinic can help individuals who may be struggling with chronic nosebleeds.

What types of nosebleeds can occur?

The two types of nosebleeds are the anterior nosebleed and the posterior nosebleed. Anterior nosebleeds occur near the front of the nose, typically on the wall between the nostrils. A blood vessel may be broken in this area and cause blood to come out the front of the nose. A posterior nosebleed is not nearly as common, but can start deep within the nose. Blood flows down the back of the throat and mouth even when the patient is sitting or standing. These types of nosebleeds are more serious and typically require the care of a professional.

What causes recurring nosebleeds?

Some patients deal regularly with nosebleeds. This may be due to a variety of different reasons, so working with a doctor to determine the cause is important to reduce the severity and occurrences of these problems. Nosebleeds may occur due to:

  • Blowing of the nose that breaks superficial blood vessels
  • Chronic dryness, especially that which is caused by low humidity
  • Allergies and infections that can lead to itching and picking of the nose
  • Chronic drug use, especially anticoagulants and anti-inflammatories
  • An injury or fracture to the nose or head
  • Hemorrhagic telangiectasia, a genetic disorder
  • The presence of a tumor, malignant or nonmalignant, in the nasal cavity

When should I see an ENT?

A professional should be consulted if a nosebleed is extremely severe and will not stop, is associated with a head injury, or if it becomes a chronic issue with no known cause. Our doctor will thoroughly evaluate the patient and make recommendations on care needed.
